The National Weather Service has issued a New Year’s Day weather update. NWS is calling for much colder temps due to cold air mass entering the region Sunday night through Tuesday morning. Wind chills for our area could be in the upper teens to lower 20’s. As always watch for ice on overpasses if conditions warrant.
Please remember the 4 P’s of cold weather: People-check on those who may be less fortunate, especially the elderly. Pets-make sure extra food is available for all outside animals and if a hard freeze happens, that the water bowl is not frozen. Pipes-many of the older homes in this area have exposed pipes in the attic. If you are leaving during this cold snap, consider turning off the water and draining your house or having a neighbor keep a close eye on your home. If staying home, consider propping open the attic access and turning up the heat a few extra degrees. Dripping the faucet reduces the pressure needed to fight fires and is not recommended for that reason. Plants-cover from top to ground level for tender in-ground plants, consider bringing in all potted plants during the coldest hours.
Fire hazards increase during cold snaps. Make sure there are no combustibles within 3’ of your heater in the attic. If you use room space heaters, make sure it is well away from any combustible, and has a tip control feature. Never use old, exposed element electric space heaters!
Lastly check your smoke detector battery, talk over an exit plan with young children and visiting friends; all this will help ensure a safe New Year.
