Recycle used holiday lights with the City of West University and the Houston Zoo.

From the City of West University:

Frustrated with broken holiday lights, or just have a bunch that no longer suits your needs?  Don’t throw them away! Recycle them. The City of West U has a convenient drop off location at our Public Works Administrative Office Building, located at 3826 Amherst, Monday – Friday between 7:30 am and 5:30 pm.  The collection bin will be available through January 10, 2019.

Residents wishing to recycle lights after this date may do so at the City’s bi-annual e-waste collection event that occurs the first Saturday in May and November.

The West U collection bin was the idea of Councilwoman Mardi Turner, a long-time volunteer with the Zoo. She recommended that the City join with the Zoo to make recycling stringed Christmas lights easy for residents.

The program began in 2017 and has been continued this year. Only string lights are accepted. Items such as flood lights, extension cords and light hooks are not recycled in this program. A separate tree collection will be held after the holidays.

Recycling holiday lights keeps them from ending up in landfills, which extends the life of the landfill and means less landfill space is needed.
