Am I right or wrong in thinking that the city owns or controls the easement from the street, about 6 to 10 feet or so from the curb? I grew up in a neighborhood with sidewalks. I was pleased that my house in Bellaire had sidewalks when we moved in. Some neighbors nearby do not have them; hence, there is a lot of foot traffic in the street, which is dangerous. Babies are pushed in their strollers by their parents or nannies, right down the middle of the street. Sidewalks are civilized. I cast my vote for them!

We have sidewalks on our street but did not always have good or contiguous ones. Luckily we were part of one of the earlier projects where the city came in and replaced bad sidewalks and put new ones where there were none. People use our sidewalks every day to walk with their kids or dogs and our neighbor’s little girls love to ride their bikes on them. We feel fortunate to have good sidewalks and are also for them. As for the easement, I believe the city has a right to use it for sidewalks and that people are not suppose to plant in the easement. We have a 10 ft easement in our backyard and if we were to plant something there I know the city has a right to dig it up if they need to access something.
