After much deliberation, Bellaire City Council unanimously voted to return S. Rice Ave. to it’s original configuration of 4 lanes with parallel parking in front of City Hall.
The street was changed to 3 lanes during construction of the new City Hall to allow more parking for the new city buildings and events in Bellaire. However some questioned whether this additional parking was needed. Before the construction of the new buildings, there were 142 parking spaces available which included 32 parallel spaces on southbound Rice. With the new configuration of one lane southbound, there are 195 spaces including 47 angled parking spaces on southbound Rice. In the past there have been complaints of not enough parking during city events.
Several citizens wrote letters to Council asking for the street to return to 4 lanes and some people were unhappy about the merge into one lane near Linden St.
