After the owner of RG Homes was arrested for tampering with a government document in relation to the inspection process, Bellaire’s City Manager deffended the City’s inspection procedures.
The Houston Chronicle reports that there have been “complaints from residents who say the municipality should have been more vigilant inspecting their homes, many of which are now leaking, cracking and experiencing drainage problems. Allegations against one custom builder have led to public denunciation, arbitration filings and at least one lawsuit.”
“City Manager Paul Hofmann said the procedures for inspecting and permitting work done by builders in Bellaire are sound. He said the city, like many other communities, follows international guidelines and uses the inspection process to focus on safety and health but not the workmanship itself.”
Hoffman explained that homeowners “should not be counting on the inspection process to be the assurance of a quality product.” He said, “I think they are expecting an intensity of inspection effort that cities are not set up to provide that goes far beyond the regulation of basic building code requirements.”
RG Homes has been in the news after several homeowners complained that their homes had construction defects.
