New SW Houston Composite High School Mountain Bike Team finishes 19th in the State.
While the Texas High School Mountain Bike League has been in existence for 6 years, this was the first year for Bellaire HS to field a team. Team Captain, Jared Clark, created the club at Bellaire and since there weren’t enough students from Bellaire to field a team, they opened it up to any high school student living in southwest Houston.
The SW Houston Composite Team finished 19th in the State Championship Race held this past weekend in Comfort, Texas. Although it hailed on their tents the night before the race and it was freezing cold when they woke up, Sophomores Jared Clark and Philip Davis (the only non-Bellaire HS members of the team) finished finished 13th and 23rd respectively and Freshman Eli Pustilnik finished 35th in the State Championship. Although mechanical
issues stopped the other members of the team from finishing this weekend’s race, these team members received their state ranking from their previous races of the season. Tessa Walter, 13th, Fernando Lopez 50th, and Travis Wu 60th.
During the season, the team typically practices twice a week and rides trails around the greater Houston area. The Texas High School Mountain Bike League race season is in the Spring and consists of 5 races. The team pre-rides the course the day before the actual race so overnight camping is involved.
