On Monday, August 2, Bellaire City Council discussed adopting an ordinance that would “prohibit or otherwise regulate short term rentals within the City.”
Several Bellaire residents spoke in favor of prohibiting short term rentals, based on experiences they had on their blocks. Council members Lewis and Hotze leaned toward adopting the ordinance while the other council members would rather look for a “creative solution” to regulate these types of rentals in order to try and eliminate things like “party houses” and disruptions in the neighborhood.
After much discussion, council voted to postpone the item and possibly have a workshop or a public hearing to further discuss solutions to the specific problems that some short term rentals create. There is no set date for the continued discussion.
